IN November, 1950, 2nd Platoon, E Co. 2nd Battalion, US Marine Corps, was ordered to take Hill 698.The temperature was down around 30 degrees below zero. There were two rifle squads involved in the attack, about 26 men. Through machine gun fire they charged across a saddle from their location to the enemy position on the adjoining hill-top. One Marine killed a Chinese Communist soldier who was making a bayonet attack. After a vicious fight, the Marines took the enemy position.
But, the Chinese refused to give in. They launched three quick counterattacks. Lt. John Yancy (who, during WWII on Guadalcanal, had, with a few others, charged a company of Japanese soldiers, killing 76 of them and earning a Navy Cross and an officer’s commission) fired his BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) until it caught fire and burned his hands. The 26 Marines faced hundreds of Chinese soldiers; they were swarming the hilltop like ants. Yancy’s men were about to be overrun when along came Pvt. James Gallagher, firing his machine gun from the hip, like some heroic figure out of a movie. His own squad had been so shot up that he had gone hunting for anyone he could help. The Marines counterattacked and secured the hill. Later, when Yancy asked Gallagher why he fought on so outrageously, he simply stated, “Skipper, my Momma didn’t raise no cowards.” Did yours? Fight on!
